
The English language consists, as we know,
of 26 letters, A-Z. We use these letters together to create words.
The language of the Ancient Egyptians, called Hieroglyphics, consists
of more than 2,000 characters! Instead of putting together letters to
make words as we do in English, hieroglyph characters each have a single
word meaning. Egyptian sentences look sort of like a rebus, as we know
it. Example:
For any names or words that the Egyptians
did not have a symbol for, there was an alphabet of signs and symbols
that could spell them out.
